Laboratory Automation

The CAREG Common Molecular Biology Laboratory offers functions performed by a Biomek robot - the NX Span-8 Laboratory Automation Workstation. The Biomek NX is a multiaxis liquid-handling instrument used in life sciences and bioresearch laboratories. The span-8 pod performs liquid transfers using a series of eight probes that move independently. The span-8 pod is also equipped with a gripper tool that grasps and moves labware from one location to another. A variety of labware and hardware adapt the Biomek NX to accomplish multiple tasks, ranging from performing simple labware positioning and liquid transfers, to completing complex activities that require the use of a linear microplate shaker and solid phase extraction with a vacuum manifold.
